A LITTLE ABOUT THE AREA
Flamingo Heights is 3,460 feet [1,055 m] above sea level; in other words, the altitude of Flamingo Heights is about ¾ mile, or approximately 1 kilometer above sea level. It is near the town of Yucca Valley among a grop of communities occupying the Mojave Desert Morongo Basin area that include Joshua Tree, Landers and Twentynine Palms, home of the U.S. Marine Corp on the northern Edge of California's San Bernardino County. Because the U.S. Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center occupies hundreds of thousands of acres to the north, the city of Yucca Valley is home to many military personnel. Yucca Valley elevation is 35,000 / 3,279 feet above sea level. The area known as Joshua Tree has been inhabited for at least 5000 years. It encompasses over 800,000 acres that now include the Joshua Tree National Park and the township of Joshua Tree. The Park is open to the public for hiking, climbing and tours for a fee. Hikers, historian, nature and adventure seekers will enjoy visiting Pioneer Town Mountains Preserve, which boasts 20,000-acre Pipes Canyon Wilderness and is the largest nonprofit wilderness in California.
